Driving Posture Tips: How to Reduce Neck, Shoulder and Arm Pain in the Car

Many people spend hours each week driving, whether it’s commuting to work, travelling between appointments or taking long road trips. Poor driving posture can place significant strain on the neck, shoulders and upper back, and may even contribute to symptoms that travel down the arm, such as tingling, numbness or nerve-related discomfort.

One of the most common mistakes drivers make is sitting too upright or too close to the steering wheel while reaching forward with their arms. This position can encourage the shoulders to round forwards and the head to protrude, increasing tension through the neck and upper shoulder muscles.

A better driving position starts with adjusting the seat to provide a slight recline rather than sitting perfectly upright. This allows you to sit back comfortably against the seat and headrest while maintaining support through the spine.

Other helpful driving posture tips include:

  • Sit back into the seat rather than leaning forwards.
  • Use a slight recline in the seat back.
  • Adjust the steering wheel closer if possible.
  • Position yourself close enough that your elbows can remain comfortably by your sides.
  • Avoid reaching excessively towards the steering wheel.
  • Keep your head resting comfortably over your shoulders.

Many people find that holding the steering wheel lower, rather than gripping at the very top, allows the shoulders to stay more relaxed. Positions such as the “4 and 8 o’clock” hand placement can help keep the elbows closer to the body and reduce tension through the neck and shoulders.

Benefits of optimising your driving posture may include:

  • Reduced neck pain and stiffness
  • Less shoulder tension
  • Improved upper back comfort
  • Reduced nerve irritation into the arm
  • Improved comfort during long drives
  • Better overall posture

If you regularly experience neck, shoulder or arm symptoms while driving, a Physiotherapy assessment may help identify contributing factors and provide strategies to improve comfort both in and out of the car.

At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists can assess posture-related pain, provide ergonomic advice and develop personalised treatment plans to help keep you comfortable during driving and everyday activities.
