Computer Posture Tips: How to Set Up Your Workstation to Reduce Neck and Back Pain

Poor computer posture is one of the most common causes of neck, shoulder and lower back discomfort. Many people spend hours each day sitting at a desk, often without realising how their workstation setup is contributing to pain and stiffness.

One of the most important areas to address is the lower back. Rather than focusing solely on keeping the shoulders back or the chin tucked in, it is often more effective to start by improving lumbar support. Supporting the natural curve of the lower back encourages a more upright sitting posture, which can help position the head directly over the shoulders and reduce forward head posture.

Using a lumbar support cushion or rolled towel behind the lower back can help maintain this position while allowing the body to relax comfortably into the chair.

Another common issue is sitting too far away from the desk. When the keyboard, mouse or screen are positioned too far away, people often lean forward, increasing strain through the neck, shoulders and upper back.

For an optimal workstation setup:

  • Sit back in the chair with adequate lumbar support
  • Position your belly button close to the desk
  • Bring the keyboard and mouse close enough to keep the elbows resting comfortably by your sides
  • Keep the screen approximately an arm’s length away
  • Position the top of the screen around eye level
  • Maintain a relaxed posture rather than reaching forwards

Benefits of a well-positioned workstation may include:

  • Reduced neck pain
  • Reduced shoulder tension
  • Improved lower back support
  • Better posture throughout the day
  • Reduced fatigue during computer work
  • Improved comfort and productivity

Small adjustments to workstation setup can often make a significant difference to how the body feels during prolonged desk work.
