Clamshell Progressions: Building Hip Stability and Glute Strength

The clamshell exercise is one of the most commonly prescribed exercises for improving hip stability and strengthening the gluteus medius muscle. This muscle sits on the side of the hip and plays a critical role in controlling pelvic stability during walking, running, jumping and single-leg activities.

While standard clamshells are a useful starting point, many people eventually outgrow the basic exercise or struggle to properly activate the correct muscle. A common mistake is compensating with muscles at the front of the hip, the hamstrings or the lower back rather than using the gluteus medius.

One helpful strategy is to place your fingers over the side of the hip while performing the exercise. This can improve awareness of the muscle and help ensure it is doing the work.

As strength improves, several clamshell progressions can be introduced to further challenge the hip stabilisers. These include:

  • Elevated clamshells where the knees are lifted off the ground
  • Controlled hip rotation movements while maintaining the elevated position
  • Long-lever clamshells, which increase the load on the glute muscles
  • Straight-leg hip abduction exercises
  • “Kung Fu Kick” progressions, where the leg is extended while maintaining hip control

The key focus during all variations is ensuring the movement comes from the hip rather than the lower back or front of the hip. Leaning backwards or rotating excessively through the pelvis can reduce the effectiveness of the exercise and shift the load away from the target muscle.
