Pain Along the Outside of the Shin? A Simple Stretch May Help
Pain along the outside of the shin is a common complaint among runners, walkers and people who spend long periods on their feet. This discomfort is often associated with tightness in the muscles located on the front and outer part of the lower leg, which can become overloaded with increased activity, changes in training or prolonged standing.
When these muscles become tight, they can contribute to aching, stiffness and discomfort along the outside of the shin. Improving flexibility and reducing tension through the area may help improve comfort and support recovery.
One simple stretch can be performed while sitting. Start by crossing one ankle over the opposite knee. From this position, gently pull the foot and toes upwards and towards the opposite corner until a stretch is felt along the outside of the lower leg. If a stronger stretch is needed, you can lean slightly forward from the hips while maintaining the position.
For best results:
- Hold the stretch for approximately 30 seconds
- Repeat the stretch several times per day
- Stay within a comfortable range
- Avoid forcing the movement into pain
Benefits of stretching the muscles along the outside of the shin may include:
- Reduced muscle tightness
- Improved ankle mobility
- Reduced lower leg discomfort
- Better recovery after exercise
- Improved flexibility and movement
While stretching can be helpful for muscular tightness, ongoing shin pain may sometimes be related to other conditions such as tendon irritation, shin splints or training overload. If symptoms persist, worsen or limit your ability to exercise, professional assessment may be beneficial.
At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists can assess lower leg pain, identify the underlying cause of your symptoms and develop an individualised treatment and rehabilitation plan to help you return to activity comfortably and confidently.
