Reducing Lower Back Strain During Gym Exercises

Lower back pain is a common complaint among people who exercise regularly, particularly during standing gym exercises such as tricep pushdowns, cable work and upper body strength training. In many cases, discomfort can develop when excessive arching occurs through the lower back, placing unnecessary stress on the lumbar spine during movement.

One simple technique that may help reduce pressure on the lower back is improving pelvic and core positioning before starting an exercise. By gently tucking the tailbone under and engaging the abdominal muscles, it is often possible to create a more stable trunk position and reduce excessive movement through the lower back.

This strategy helps encourage the abdominal muscles to contribute more effectively to spinal support while performing exercises. Instead of relying on the lower back to maintain posture, the core muscles work together to provide stability throughout the movement.

Common cues that may help include:

  • Gently tucking the tailbone under
  • Lightly bracing the abdominal muscles
  • Maintaining a neutral spine position
  • Avoiding excessive arching through the lower back
  • Staying controlled throughout the exercise

This technique can be particularly useful during:

  • Tricep pushdowns
  • Cable exercises
  • Standing upper body exercises
  • Resistance training movements
  • Functional gym-based activities

In addition to reducing stress on the lower back, maintaining good core engagement may also improve overall exercise technique and stability. Over time, developing better awareness of pelvic and trunk positioning can help improve movement efficiency and reduce the likelihood of aggravating back pain during training.

If lower back pain continues despite modifying technique, it may indicate an underlying strength, mobility or movement control issue that requires further assessment.

At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can assess exercise technique, identify contributing factors to back pain and provide individualised rehabilitation and strengthening programs to help you train safely and confidently.
