Running Injury Prevention: Why the “Running Man” Exercise Is Great for Runners
Whether you’re training for a marathon, fun run or simply trying to improve your running performance, strength and stability exercises are an important part of reducing injury risk. Many running-related injuries occur not because of poor fitness, but because of weaknesses in balance, hip stability and movement control.
One of the most effective exercises for runners is the “Running Man” exercise. This movement closely mimics the mechanics of running while challenging several key areas that contribute to efficient running technique.
The exercise involves balancing on one leg while lifting the opposite knee, before extending the leg backwards and returning to the starting position. Adding coordinated arm movements can further replicate the natural running motion and increase the challenge.
The Running Man exercise helps train:
- Hip stability
- Core strength
- Single-leg balance
- Coordination
- Running-specific movement patterns
- Lower limb control
Because running is essentially a series of controlled single-leg movements, exercises that improve balance and stability on one leg can have a significant impact on performance and injury prevention. Strong hip stabilisers help control pelvic position during running, which may reduce excessive stress on the knees, ankles and lower back.
Regularly incorporating exercises such as the Running Man into a training program may help improve running efficiency and build resilience against common overuse injuries.
Potential benefits include:
- Improved balance and coordination
- Better running mechanics
- Increased hip and core strength
- Reduced risk of running-related injuries
- Improved single-leg stability
As with any exercise program, consistency is important. Performing a few sets several times per week can help build strength and control over time.
At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can assess running technique, identify movement deficits and create personalised running rehabilitation and strength programs to help keep you running pain-free and performing at your best.
