Releasing Shoulder Blade Tension With a Spiky Ball

Tension and tightness around the shoulder blades are very common, particularly for people who spend long hours sitting at a desk, working on computers, driving or performing repetitive upper body activities. Muscle tightness through this region can contribute to stiffness, aching and discomfort around the neck, upper back and shoulders.

One simple self-management technique that may help relieve shoulder tension is using a spiky massage ball against a wall. This allows targeted pressure to be applied to tight muscles around the shoulder blade and upper back.

The shoulder blade, also known as the scapula, sits over the rib cage and is surrounded by several muscles that help control shoulder and upper back movement. By adjusting arm position, it is possible to create more space around the scapula and access areas of muscle tightness more effectively.

A common technique involves:

  • Placing a spiky massage ball between the upper back and a wall
  • Crossing the arm across the body to help open the space around the shoulder blade
  • Leaning body weight gently into the ball
  • Slowly moving the body up and down to target tight or tender areas

The ball can also be repositioned closer to the spine or around different parts of the shoulder blade to target additional areas of muscle tension.

Using a spiky ball may help:

  • Reduce shoulder and upper back tightness
  • Improve mobility around the shoulder blade
  • Relieve muscle tension from desk work or posture
  • Improve comfort during daily activities
  • Assist with self-management between treatments

Pressure should remain firm but comfortable, and movements should be slow and controlled. Spending time on particularly tender areas may help encourage the muscles to relax over time.
