Upper Body Exercises You Can Do at Home Without Equipment
Building upper body strength is important for improving posture, supporting shoulder health and making everyday activities easier. The good news is that you do not need a gym or specialised equipment to perform effective upper body exercises at home. Bodyweight exercises can provide an excellent challenge while improving strength, stability and muscular endurance.
One effective exercise is the eccentric push-up. This variation focuses on slowly lowering the body towards the floor while maintaining good body control. Eccentric exercises help improve strength through the chest, shoulders and arms while also building stability through the core. Pushing back up from the knees can make the movement more manageable for beginners.
Shoulder taps performed in a plank position are another excellent exercise for upper body and core stability. By maintaining a stable trunk while lifting one hand at a time to tap the opposite shoulder, the body is challenged to resist rotation and maintain control through the shoulders and abdominal muscles.
Shoulder rocking drills performed on the forearms can also help strengthen the shoulders and upper body while improving control through the trunk. Slowly rocking the body forwards and backwards increases the demand on the shoulder muscles and core stabilisers.
Tricep dips using the edge of a couch or chair are another simple exercise that can help strengthen the back of the arms and shoulders. Adjusting foot position can make the movement easier or more challenging depending on your strength and fitness level.
