Sciatica and Nerve Pain: Why Nerve Flossing May Help

Sciatica is a common condition that causes pain, tightness or discomfort travelling through the buttock and down the back of the leg. These symptoms are often related to irritation or sensitivity of the sciatic nerve and can range from mild tightness through to sharp or burning pain.

Many people naturally try to stretch the leg aggressively when these symptoms occur. However, in some cases, prolonged stretching can actually aggravate the nerve further and increase irritation. Instead of forcefully stretching the nerve, a gentler movement approach called “nerve flossing” or “nerve gliding” may be more appropriate.

Nerve flossing exercises are designed to gently move the nerve through its normal range without placing excessive tension on it. The goal is to help the nerve tolerate movement more comfortably while reducing sensitivity over time.

A common sciatic nerve flossing exercise involves:

  • Lying on your back with one knee bent to help support the lower back
  • Slowly straightening the affected leg
  • Pulling the toes back towards the body
  • Moving only until a gentle pulling sensation is felt
  • Returning to the starting position without forcing the stretch

The movement should be smooth and controlled rather than held for long periods. Repetitions are typically performed gradually to encourage mobility without increasing irritation.

It is important to note that nerve flossing exercises are not suitable for everyone. People with acute disc injuries, severe pain or worsening symptoms should avoid self-treatment and seek professional assessment. If symptoms increase significantly during the exercise, it is best to stop and seek advice from a Physiotherapist.

At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists can assess sciatic pain and nerve-related symptoms, identify the underlying cause and provide an individualised rehabilitation plan to help reduce pain, improve movement and support recovery safely.
