Plantar Fasciopathy: How Foot Taping May Help Heel and Arch Pain
Pain through the bottom of the foot is a very common condition, particularly in people who spend long periods standing, walking, running or exercising on hard surfaces. One of the most common causes of pain in this area is plantar fasciopathy, which involves irritation of the plantar fascia — a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel towards the toes.
Plantar fasciopathy commonly causes pain around the base of the heel, especially during the first few steps in the morning or after periods of rest. Some people may also experience discomfort extending through the arch of the foot.
One treatment strategy often used to help reduce symptoms is Low-Dye taping. This taping technique is designed to support the arch of the foot and reduce stress placed on the plantar fascia during walking and standing activities.
The taping process involves:
- Applying anchor tape around the heel
- Using overlapping strips of tape to support the arch
- Applying gentle tension to help lift and support the plantar fascia
- Securing the tape with additional strips to hold the support in place
When applied correctly, the tape acts similarly to a temporary supportive insole attached directly to the foot. This may help reduce strain on irritated tissues and improve comfort during daily activities.
Low-Dye taping may be beneficial for people experiencing:
- Heel pain
- Arch pain
- Pain with walking or standing
- Morning foot stiffness
- Symptoms associated with plantar fasciopathy
While taping can help provide short-term symptom relief, long-term management often requires addressing contributing factors such as calf tightness, foot strength, footwear and load management.
At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists can assess your foot pain, identify contributing factors and provide individualised treatment, rehabilitation exercises and taping techniques to help reduce pain and improve function.
