Mid-Back Pain and Poor Posture: How Thoracic Mobility Exercises Can Help

Mid-back pain and stiffness are extremely common, particularly for people who spend long hours sitting at a desk, driving, studying or working in front of a computer. Poor posture and prolonged slouched positions can place increased stress on the thoracic spine — the middle section of the back — leading to stiffness, tightness and discomfort over time.

One of the most common movement restrictions associated with mid-back pain is reduced thoracic extension. Thoracic extension refers to the ability of the mid-back to straighten and extend upright. When mobility through this area becomes limited, people often adopt a rounded shoulder and slumped posture, which can contribute to ongoing pain and reduced movement.

Thoracic mobility exercises can help improve posture, reduce stiffness and encourage better movement through the spine. A simple and effective exercise involves using a foam roller positioned across the upper or middle back while gently extending backwards over the roller. This movement helps encourage thoracic extension and can create a gentle stretching sensation through the chest and mid-back region.
