Hamstring Stretching: A Simple Technique to Improve Flexibility

Tight hamstrings are a very common problem and can contribute to stiffness, reduced mobility and discomfort through the hips, pelvis and lower back. Hamstring tightness is often seen in people who spend long periods sitting, participate in running or gym training, or have reduced flexibility through the lower body.

While traditional static stretching can be helpful, another effective method for improving flexibility is called the “contract-relax” technique. This stretching method combines gentle muscle contraction with relaxation to help improve movement and increase muscle length more effectively.

The exercise can be performed lying on your back using a towel or strap wrapped around the shin or foot. The leg is lifted to a comfortable position while keeping the toes pointing towards the body. From there, a gentle downward push into the towel is held for several seconds before relaxing and moving the leg slightly further into the stretch.

This repeated cycle of contracting and relaxing may help the muscles release tension more effectively than stretching alone and can improve flexibility through both the hamstrings and hips.

Benefits of improving hamstring flexibility may include:

  • Reduced muscle tightness
  • Improved hip mobility
  • Better movement during exercise
  • Improved posture and flexibility
  • Reduced strain through the lower back and pelvis
  • Increased comfort during daily activities

It is important to perform hamstring stretches gradually and within a comfortable range. Stretching should create a mild pulling sensation but should not cause sharp pain or significant discomfort.

At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can assess your flexibility, identify contributing factors to muscle tightness and provide an individualised stretching and strengthening program tailored to your goals and activity levels.
