Desk Posture and Chest Tightness: A Simple Stretch for Office Workers

After returning to work or spending long hours sitting at a desk, many people begin to notice increased tightness through the chest, upper back and shoulders. Prolonged sitting and forward-leaning posture can cause the muscles at the front of the chest to become tight while the upper back and postural muscles become fatigued or stiff.

One simple movement that may help improve posture and reduce tension is the “bow and arrow” stretch. This exercise encourages gentle rotation through the upper back while also helping open the chest and improve mobility through the thoracic spine.

The exercise can be performed easily in an office chair by sitting slightly forward with the arms extended in front of the body. From there, one arm is pulled backwards in a rowing or “bow and arrow” motion while rotating through the upper back and following the hand with the eyes. The movement is then repeated on the opposite side.

Adding a slow deep breath during the movement may help further open the chest and encourage relaxation through the upper body.

Benefits of this exercise may include:

  • Reduced chest tightness
  • Improved thoracic spine mobility
  • Reduced upper back stiffness
  • Improved posture awareness
  • Increased movement after prolonged sitting
  • Reduced tension from desk-based work

Regular movement breaks throughout the day are important for reducing stiffness and improving comfort during prolonged sitting. Gentle mobility exercises can help counteract the effects of sustained postures and improve overall movement quality.

At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can assess posture, workplace-related pain and movement restrictions, and provide individualised exercises and ergonomic advice to help reduce discomfort and improve long-term spinal health.
