Hamstring Injuries: Why Glute Activation Is Important for Recovery

Hamstring injuries are one of the most common muscle strains seen in running and field-based sports. While many people focus heavily on hamstring strengthening during rehabilitation, an often-overlooked factor is the role of the glute muscles — particularly the gluteus maximus — in supporting efficient movement and reducing strain on the hamstrings.

The glute muscles are responsible for powerful hip extension movements, which occur during activities such as running, sprinting and jumping. If the glutes are not activating effectively, the hamstrings can become overloaded as they attempt to compensate during movement. Over time, this may contribute to recurring hamstring tightness or repeated strains.

A common issue is poor timing or reduced activation of the glute muscles during running and lower body exercise. Some people unknowingly rely more on their lower back or hamstrings instead of properly engaging the glutes during hip extension movements.

One simple starting point is learning to consciously activate the glute muscles without excessively tensing the hamstrings or lower back. Practicing controlled glute squeezes and hip extension movements can help improve awareness and muscle activation patterns before progressing into more dynamic exercises.

As strength and control improve, glute activation exercises can be progressed into more functional movements such as:

  • Hip extension drills
  • Fitball or BOSU exercises
  • Sled pushes
  • Running drills
  • Strength-based lower body exercises
