Hamstring Injuries: Why Glute Activation Is Essential for Recovery and Prevention

Hamstring strains are one of the most common injuries seen in runners and field-based athletes. While many people focus on stretching and strengthening the hamstrings themselves, a commonly overlooked factor is the role of the gluteus maximus — the large muscle of the buttocks responsible for generating power through hip extension.

During running, sprinting and explosive movements, the glutes should be one of the primary muscles driving the body forward. However, many people struggle to activate their glutes effectively or have poor timing between their glutes and hamstrings. When this happens, the hamstrings can become overloaded as they attempt to compensate, increasing the risk of recurrent strains and ongoing tightness.

A key component of hamstring rehabilitation is learning how to activate the glute muscles independently. One simple starting exercise is placing your hands on your glutes and practicing squeezing the muscles without excessively tightening the hamstrings or lower back. The goal is to develop awareness and control so the glutes contribute more effectively during movement.
