Hamstring Stretching: A Simple Way to Improve Flexibility at Home

Tight hamstrings are a common complaint among runners, cyclists, gym-goers and people who spend long periods sitting throughout the day. The hamstring muscles run along the back of the thigh and can become tight due to prolonged sitting, reduced flexibility or increased training loads. When hamstring flexibility is limited, it may contribute to stiffness, reduced mobility and discomfort during everyday activities or exercise.

While foam rollers can be useful for many muscle groups, some people find it difficult to effectively target the hamstrings using self-massage techniques. In these situations, a simple stretching routine may be a more practical way to improve flexibility.

One effective hamstring stretch requires only a stable surface approximately chair height. Place one heel on the surface while keeping the knee relatively straight and the toes pointing towards the ceiling. From this position, gently lean the body forward from the hips until a stretch is felt along the back of the thigh.

The key is to keep the movement controlled and avoid rounding excessively through the lower back. The stretch should create a gentle pulling sensation without causing pain.

When performing the stretch:

  • Keep the toes pointing upwards
  • Lean forward from the hips
  • Maintain steady, relaxed breathing
  • Hold the stretch for at least 15 seconds
  • Repeat several times as needed

Some people find it helpful to use slow breathing as a guide, holding the stretch for approximately five deep breaths.

Benefits of regular hamstring stretching may include:

  • Improved flexibility
  • Reduced muscle tightness
  • Improved comfort during walking and exercise
  • Better mobility for daily activities
  • Reduced stiffness from prolonged sitting

At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can assess flexibility limitations, identify contributing factors and provide personalised stretching and strengthening programs to help improve mobility and keep you moving comfortably.
