Lower Body Strength Exercises You Can Do at Home
Building lower body strength is important for maintaining mobility, improving balance, reducing injury risk and supporting everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs and lifting. The good news is that effective lower body strengthening exercises can be performed at home with little to no equipment.
At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, we often prescribe simple bodyweight exercises that can help strengthen the glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings and calves while also improving stability and coordination.
One highly effective exercise is the Bulgarian split squat. This exercise involves elevating the back foot on a chair or couch while performing a single-leg squat movement. Leaning slightly forward tends to increase activation through the glute muscles, while a more upright posture shifts the focus towards the quadriceps at the front of the thigh.
Hamstring bridge exercises are another excellent option for strengthening the muscles at the back of the legs. By digging the heels into a chair or couch and lifting the hips, the hamstrings and glutes are required to work together to support the movement. Progressing to a single-leg variation can increase the challenge further.
Single-leg squats and step-ups are also useful for improving lower limb control, balance and strength. These exercises help train the muscles used during walking, running and stair climbing while also improving stability through the hips, knees and ankles.
Benefits of lower body strengthening exercises may include:
- Improved balance and stability
- Increased leg strength
- Better athletic performance
- Reduced injury risk
- Improved movement confidence
- Better support for the hips, knees and lower back
Exercises should always be performed with good control and within a comfortable range. Gradually progressing the difficulty over time can help build strength safely and effectively.
At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can create an individualised lower body strengthening program tailored to your goals, injury history and current fitness level.
