Hamstring Strengthening Exercises You Can Do at Home

Strong hamstrings play an important role in supporting the hips, knees and lower back during everyday movement, sport and exercise. Weak hamstrings can contribute to reduced athletic performance, muscle tightness, lower limb injuries and difficulty with activities such as running, lifting and climbing stairs.

One simple but highly effective hamstring exercise that can be performed at home involves using a towel on a smooth floor surface. This exercise challenges both the hamstrings and glute muscles while also engaging the core for stability.

To perform the exercise:

  • Lie on your back with your feet placed on a towel
  • Lift the hips off the floor by pushing through the heels
  • Keep the abdominal muscles engaged throughout the movement
  • Slowly slide the heels towards the body
  • Extend the legs back out in a controlled manner

This movement places the hamstrings under tension while requiring control through the hips and trunk. The exercise can be progressed further by performing the movement one leg at a time, increasing the demand on strength and stability.

Hamstring strengthening exercises may help improve:

  • Lower body strength
  • Running and sporting performance
  • Hip and knee stability
  • Injury prevention
  • Control during bending and lifting activities
  • Overall movement efficiency

As with any strengthening exercise, maintaining good technique and control is important. Movements should be slow and controlled, with the hips remaining elevated and the abdominal muscles engaged throughout the exercise.

Exercises can be modified depending on current strength levels and progressed gradually over time to continue building muscle endurance and stability safely.

At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can assess muscle strength, identify movement deficits and design an individualised strengthening program tailored to your rehabilitation goals, sporting demands and current fitness level.
