Sinus Pressure Relief: Simple Self-Massage Techniques You Can Try at Home

Sinus congestion and facial pressure are common complaints, particularly during allergy season, colds or upper respiratory infections. Symptoms can include pressure around the nose, cheeks, forehead and eyes, often leading to discomfort, headaches and a feeling of blocked nasal passages.

While self-massage will not treat the underlying cause of sinus congestion, it may provide temporary relief by helping reduce tension around the facial muscles and encouraging drainage through the sinus regions.

One simple technique involves gently massaging along the sides of the nose. Using your fingertips, apply light pressure and perform small circular motions while gradually moving down the length of the nose. Spending several seconds in each area may help relieve tension and improve comfort.

Another useful area to target is along the cheekbones, where the maxillary sinuses are located. Applying gentle pressure along the edge of the cheekbone and identifying tender spots may help reduce feelings of facial tightness. Once a sensitive area is located, gentle sustained pressure can be applied for a short period before moving to the next area.

When performing sinus self-massage:

  • Use gentle to moderate pressure
  • Avoid pressing hard enough to cause significant pain
  • Focus on areas that feel mildly tender or tight
  • Perform slow circular movements
  • Stop if symptoms worsen

Potential benefits may include:

  • Temporary relief of facial pressure
  • Reduced muscle tension around the face
  • Improved comfort during sinus congestion
  • A feeling of reduced nasal blockage
  • Relaxation of surrounding soft tissues

While self-massage can be a helpful short-term strategy, ongoing sinus symptoms, severe facial pain or persistent congestion may require medical assessment to identify the underlying cause.

At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, we often help patients manage headaches, neck tension and postural issues that can sometimes contribute to facial discomfort, while also providing advice on strategies to improve overall comfort and wellbeing.
