Mid and Upper Back Stiffness: A Simple Morning Mobility Stretch
Waking up with stiffness through the mid or upper back is a common issue, particularly for people who spend long hours sitting, working at a desk or sleeping in one position overnight. Tightness through the thoracic spine can make it uncomfortable to twist, reach or straighten up fully during the morning.
One simple way to improve mobility and reduce stiffness is through gentle rotational stretching exercises. These movements help encourage motion through the thoracic spine — the middle section of the back — while also helping loosen surrounding muscles and joints.
A commonly used exercise involves lying on your side with the top leg crossed over the body for support. With both arms initially positioned out in front, the top arm is then slowly rotated backwards while following the movement with the eyes. This creates a gentle rotational stretch through the mid and upper back.
This type of mobility exercise may help:
- Reduce morning stiffness
- Improve thoracic spine mobility
- Reduce tightness through the upper back
- Improve posture and movement
- Increase comfort with twisting and reaching activities
Performing gentle rotational stretches before getting out of bed can help prepare the body for movement and improve comfort during the day. The exercise should be performed slowly and within a comfortable range, creating a gentle stretching sensation rather than pain.
Thoracic mobility is important for overall spinal health and can also influence shoulder movement, posture and neck comfort. Reduced movement through the upper back can sometimes contribute to stiffness or discomfort in nearby areas.
At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can assess your spinal mobility, posture and movement patterns to develop an individualised treatment and exercise program aimed at reducing stiffness, improving mobility and helping you move more comfortably.
