Shoulder Stability Training: Why Dumbbells and Kettlebells Can Improve Shoulder Strength
Many people performing shoulder strengthening exercises rely heavily on barbells, machines or Smith machines. While these exercises can be excellent for building strength, they often require less shoulder stability than free-weight alternatives. Incorporating stability-focused exercises into your training can help improve shoulder control and potentially reduce the risk of shoulder injuries.
The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, which means it relies heavily on the surrounding muscles to provide stability during movement. The rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles work together to keep the shoulder centred and controlled while lifting weights overhead or performing upper body exercises.
One simple way to increase the stability challenge during shoulder training is to replace some barbell or machine-based exercises with dumbbell variations. Because each arm must work independently, the shoulder stabilising muscles are required to contribute more to control the movement.
An even greater challenge can be achieved using a bottoms-up kettlebell press. This exercise involves holding a kettlebell upside down while performing a pressing movement. Because the weight is unstable, the shoulder and forearm muscles must work harder to maintain control throughout the exercise.
