Face Pulls: A Great Exercise for Shoulder Strength and Posture
If you spend long hours sitting at a desk, notice your shoulders rounding forward, or participate in sports such as tennis, cricket or squash, strengthening the muscles around your shoulders and upper back is essential. One of the best exercises for improving shoulder strength, posture and stability is the face pull.
Face pulls target several important muscle groups, including the rotator cuff muscles and the muscles that control the shoulder blades. These muscles help keep the shoulders stable, support healthy movement patterns and assist in maintaining an upright posture.
When these muscles become weak, people may develop rounded shoulders, poor posture or reduced shoulder control during sport and exercise. Strengthening them can help improve shoulder mechanics and reduce the risk of injury.
Face pulls can be performed using:
- A resistance band anchored to a door
- A cable machine at the gym
- Resistance tubing at home
To perform the exercise, start with the arms extended in front of you while maintaining light tension on the band. Pull the band towards your face while keeping the elbows elevated and squeezing the muscles between the shoulder blades. The movement should be controlled, focusing on quality rather than speed.
Benefits of face pulls may include:
- Improved shoulder strength
- Better posture
- Increased rotator cuff activation
- Improved shoulder blade control
- Reduced risk of shoulder injuries
- Better performance in overhead and racquet sports
For most people, performing approximately 10–12 repetitions for 2–3 sets several times per week can be an effective starting point. Like all strengthening exercises, consistency over time is key to seeing improvements.
At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can assess shoulder function, identify areas of weakness and prescribe individualised strengthening programs to improve posture, performance and long-term shoulder health.
