Rotator Cuff Pain: A Simple Stretch to Improve Shoulder Mobility

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that help stabilise the shoulder and control arm movements. Rotator cuff problems are one of the most common causes of shoulder pain and can make activities such as reaching overhead, lifting, throwing or sleeping on the affected side uncomfortable.

When the shoulder becomes irritated, stiffness and restricted movement can develop, particularly through shoulder rotation. Gentle stretching can often play an important role in maintaining mobility and reducing discomfort as part of a broader rehabilitation program.

One commonly prescribed stretch targets shoulder internal rotation. This stretch is performed lying on your side with the affected shoulder and elbow positioned at approximately 90 degrees. The forearm is then gently lowered towards the bed or floor while the opposite hand applies light pressure to assist the movement.

The stretch should be performed gradually and within a comfortable range. A gentle pulling sensation is expected, but sharp or increasing pain should be avoided.

Potential benefits of this type of stretch may include:

  • Improved shoulder mobility
  • Reduced stiffness
  • Improved rotational movement
  • Better comfort with daily activities
  • Support for rotator cuff rehabilitation
  • Improved shoulder flexibility

Consistency is often important when working on shoulder mobility. Performing gentle stretching regularly may help maintain movement and complement strengthening exercises prescribed as part of a rehabilitation program.

It is important to remember that stretching is only one component of managing rotator cuff problems. Strengthening the shoulder muscles, improving posture and addressing movement patterns are often equally important for long-term recovery.

At Spine & Sports Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapists can assess shoulder pain, determine whether the rotator cuff is contributing to your symptoms and develop an individualised treatment plan to help improve mobility, reduce pain and restore shoulder function.
